News publishers have suffered significant losses in interactions on Facebook after the social network changed its algorithm – the code which decides the order in which posts are seen by viewers.

Facebook altered its code in July, and statistics show that the top 25 news organisations saw a fall of 15% within a month of interactions with their content through the social medium.

The worst affected of those was the Huffington Post, which saw its interactions fall by nearly half, from just above 45 million to slightly above 25 million.

In explaining the algorithm change, Facebook [called the process](http://media.fb.com/2015/04/21/news-feed-fyi-balancing-content-from-friends-and-pages/?ref=interhacktives.mymagic.page) ‘balancing content from friends and pages’.

It described the logic of the alteration as ensuring that “content posted directly by the friends you care about, such as photos, videos, status updates or links, will be higher up in the News Feed so you are less likely to miss it”.

However, at the bottom of its 600-hundred word post, it noted: “The impact of these changes on your page’s distribution will vary considerably depending on the composition of your audience and your posting activity. In some cases, post reach and referral traffic could potentially decline.”

The effect of the Facebook change on traffic can be seen by comparing the same period on Twitter, the second most important social medium for the top 25 news organisations, where there was in fact a slight rise in the May-August period.
