Threads, the short form blogging platform created by Meta, is making its long-awaited debut in the European Union this month. This would mark the largest phase of expansion since the app first launched in July.

The social media giant initially held off rolling out the app to European users over concerns that they would fail to meet the EU’s Digital Markets Act requirements, which are among the toughest digital regulations in the world. Meta has created special features to comply with those regulations including the ability to consume content on the platform without creating an account as well as a data opt-out option.

Meta founder, Mark Zuckerberg, is eager to see Threads grow as the race for X alternatives continues. In October, Zuckerberg shared that Threads has around 100 million active monthly users, and according to a report from The Wall Street Journal, the EU could bring another 40 million users to the app.

Meta's launch of Threads in the EU comes at a critical time as major companies like Apple and Disney have pulled their advertisements on X following owner Elon Musk’s antisemitic comments - a move that may cause X to lose $75 million in revenue. As support for X continues to dwindle, the gap for Threads to emerge as the top text-based social media platform narrows.
